felt fish diy make your own fishing pole bucket

When I was a kid, I went to a carnival. There, they had a game where you stood in front of a curtain and cast a line over it. When reeled in, a toy or candy would be attached to the end. I LOVED that game! I went returned to it over and over again. I wanted to create an updated version of the game for JoJo to play!

  1. Trace the fish template onto freezer paper. For each fish you should have two body pieces and two head pieces.
  2. With the waxy side down, iron freezer paper templates onto desired colors of felt. The heat of the iron should adhere the paper to the felt.
  3. Following the template, cut out out the various pieces of felt. With the freezer paper attached, you will be able to create nice clean edges to your felt when cutting.
  4. Peel away freezer paper from cut felt pieces.
  5. Using Aileen's Tacky Glue glue both body pieces together. Then glue the head pieces to the body using small dots on each corner of the shape. Glueing the pieces helps them stay put while stitching the layers together.

  6. After the glue is dry, begin by stitching the eye. Starting underneath the head piece stitch an X through the head on one side. Repeat on the opposite side.
  7. Start stitching around the perimeter of the fish. I like to start at the base of the head piece.
  8. Once you reach the nose, whipstitch a washer onto the tip. Continue stitching the rest of the way around the fish.
  9. Make as many fish as you want! I made 15!

  1. To make the fishing pole, apply a strip of hot glue along the the first couple inches of the dowel.
  2. Lay twine along strip of glue and wrap around the dowel for added security.
  3. Tidy up the look of the pole by adding a piece of felt over the attached twine with hot glue.
  4. At the end of the twine, attach the magnet clasp with a knot.
TaDa! you are finished! This project took no time to make and has already been put to use for many hours! JoJo laughed uncontrollably while hanging over the edge of the couch catching fish! Her favorite part was ripping the fish off the magnet and sticking them in her bucket!

I love this game too because it really helps with motor skills and builds coordination, something we could really work on!
